In a world where environmental concerns are at the forefront, Humly, being a forward-thinking company, has made it a priority to contribute to a better world. This commitment is not just a statement but an effort reflected in their approach towards measuring and mitigating their environmental impact.
Measuring Carbon Footprint
The first step towards making a positive impact on the environment is understanding the extent of one’s carbon footprint. Humly recognised the importance of creating measurable benchmarks to quantify their improvements and impact. This involved engaging with suppliers to gather detailed data on their environmental footprint.
Humly requested a detailed Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment compliance report, offering valuable insights into their product’s materials, weights, recyclability, and recovery rates. According to the report, the Humly Room Display is 98.70% recyclable with a recovery rate of 99.70%.
Packaging Innovations
An area where Humly was able to gain a clear picture was in packaging. By using supplier data, they calculated the carbon footprint for their single unit pack and initiated a collaborative workshop to explore ways to reduce it. The result was a redesign of packaging and the introduction of bulk packs, reducing the packaging footprint by approximately 90% per unit. This not only made transportation 40% more efficient but also simplified the installation process and enhanced waste management and recycling.
Navigating Product Sustainability
Humly acknowledges the complexity of product sustainability, understanding that trade-offs may arise. While seeking solutions to increase recyclability and reusability, there could be challenges related to a more complicated manufacturing process, potentially leading to an increase in carbon emissions. Striking a balance is crucial, and Humly is committed to finding sustainable solutions without compromising on their environmental goals.
“If all of us put praise in reuse and climate efficient production and packaging, we will see a rapid change in both professional and consumer brands.” said Anders Karlsson, CEO of Humly. “At Humly, we want to pioneer a shift in the industry to choose sustainable design, production and distribution.”
Carbon Compensation and Offsetting
Humly’s dedication to sustainability extends to calculating organisational Greenhouse Gas emissions each year. This includes packaging, product, office, and travel emissions. To counteract these emissions, Humly offsets them by applying an average carbon offset rate of £14.56 per tonne through the Southpole, a reputable carbon offsetting platform. Since its founding in 2019, Humly has consistently offset all GhG emissions using this model.
Humly’s journey towards sustainability is not just a buzzword but a series of proactive measures aimed at making a significant and positive impact on the environment. By addressing their carbon footprint, innovating in packaging, navigating product sustainability, and offsetting emissions, Humly stands as a beacon of responsibility and dedication to creating a greener future.
