10 Tips for a Stronger Password

News / 01.05.24

A password is a secret piece of data (often a string of characters) used to confirm a person’s identity and unlock access. With the risk of cyber threats, the strength of passwords for digital access has become an integral part of safety. On World Password Day, we’re bringing you our top 10 tips for a strong, safe password.

  1. Use a Passphrase: Instead of a single word, using a passphrase will ensure your password is harder to crack. For example, ‘Ilov3RGBCommun1c@tions’ is much better than ‘RGBC0mms’.
  2. Avoid Personal Information: Using easily guessable information like your name, birthday or common words (Password123) means your password will be less safe.
  3. Mix Characters: Including a wide mixture of uppercase, lowercase, numbers and special characters helps to make a password stronger, especially if in unexpected locations.
  4. Unique Passwords for Each Account: Increase your overall password security by using a different password for each secure location. Then, if one is compromised, the impact on your data security is minimised.
  5. Change Passwords Regularly: Changing passwords regularly, particularly for sensitive accounts, helps to protect your data long term.
  6. Use a Password Manager: A password manager has the ability to generate and store highly complex passwords. By using one, you limit your need to remember a variety of challenging passwords and become able to sign in instantly.
  7. Enable 2-Factor Authentication: Add an extra layer to your security by enabling 2FA wherever possible. This requires you to use 2 methods to verify your identity, often including sending a secret code to your email or mobile.
  8. Be Mindful of Phishing: Avoid sharing your password via email or any unfamiliar websites. Phishing attempts happen via scam emails or texts that contain links to malicious websites.
  9. Don’t share: Don’t let anybody else know what your passwords are, including friends, family and co-workers.
  10. Monitor for Breaches: Stay informed about data breaches and change any passwords on your affected accounts..

Stay safe!
